A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DOT EASTERWOOD MURPHY UPON HER INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME.

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy has been selected for induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy is a ground-breaking Assistant Football Coach at Hinds Community College; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy is the first full-time female assistant football coach at the college level in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy was a renown All-State high school basketball player who led Starkville to two state championships; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy was also an outstanding track and field star in high school and held the conference record for the 50-, 75- and 100-yard dashes; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy was an All-American collegiate basketball player at the Mississippi University for Women; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy was the first player at MUW to score over 1,000 career points; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy played in the World University Games for the United States team in 1973; and

WHEREAS, Dot Easterwood Murphy and her husband, Gene, Head Coach of the Hinds Community College football team, are a unique husband and wife coaching combination; and

WHEREAS, under the Murphy reign the Hinds Community College Eagles have won more than 70 percent of their games and have 5 state JUCO titles and a Runner-up National JUCO Championship to their credit; and

WHEREAS, this story of this remarkable ground-breaking coach was profiled in Sports Illustrated and in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' magazine, Sharing the Victory, and was featured on the 1996 Emmy award winning special NFL/TNT "Football America":

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate and commend Dot Easterwood Murphy upon her induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Dot Easterwood Murphy.
